TIFF NEEDELL versus THE FASTEST MAN ON THE PLANT [ Allegedly! ]

Channel 5's FIFTH GEAR spent a very full day [ from 8.am to 6.30.am ] at Manchesters' BELLE VUE STADIUM filming a piece for the new series which airs from Monday 11th August.

Frankie Wainman Junior kindly provided his BriSCA Formula One for former Top Gear presenter and BTCC driver Tiff Needell to challenge Aces # 1 Speedway rider [ and World Championship contender, currently lying third ] Jason Crump. The objective, who ould be the fastest around Kirky Lane over 4 laps!

Those [ like me! ] that know Jason's form particularly around `the Vue' but World wide would realise that Tiff would have to find something very special!

The filming included Tiff driving the FWJ car in four laps against Jason, Tiff also raced a £200,000 Rallycrosss Car and a quirky off road machine that actually `freezes the fuel' to gain additional horsepower.

The filming was comprehensive and Tiff well remembered his outing at Coventry over a decade ago in the Des Chandler and when we welcomed him to Bolton when he had a go in the NFR F2.

Confidentiality precludes us from announcing the outcome [ which in the end of the day was only for fun ] until the programme has aired.

The new series begins on Monday 11th August which I believe is a run of 8 programmes in this series - and the may be interested in an in depth look at the sport for a future series [ we are inviting Tiff to Ipswich ]. We have not as yet been advised of the actual roadcast date although there is some speculation that it may be Monday 25th August. If this is accurate those at Belle Vue will be able to view the excerpt on the stadiums big screens in the lower bar [ alongside Live Elite League Speedway!]

It was an interesting day, and fascinating meeting Jason Crump who is the ultimate focused `athlete' and `professional' - a new Jason Crump fan is born! A few day later I purchased his excellent biography [ a superb read, well worth buying ] and duly autographed - and a JC Jacket!

Jason was intrigued in the FWJ machine and spoke with Frank - two interesting comments, he wouldn't get in one although he plans racing a Sprint Car in the Brisbane area when he is back home in the Winter and he would never be a promoter!

R.I.P JOHN WALKER BRISCA F1 70

It is with sadness that we advise that BriSCA Formula One driver John Walker sadly passed away on Tuesday 5th August after a brief illness.
John, having made a switch several years ago from a successful career in Karting was a regular and committed racer reaching blue grade.
Despite his brief career in the sport, John was extremely enthusiastic and worked hard for a period to try and open a track in the grounds of the family home in Lancaster.
John was supported in his racing by the Ray Witts team and all who came into contact with John know him as a polite, friendly and professional individual and he will be sadly missed.

We extend our deepest sympathies at this tragic time to the family and friends. Details of the funeral will be posted when available.

OVERSEAS COMPETITORS INFO

Peter Bengston 58P

Peter, an Agricultural Contractor, is married to Katrina, has three children, and lives in the small Manawatu town of Eketahuna.  He is 32 years of age and started racing in 1992.

A hardened Teams Racer, Racing for the Palmerston North Panthers for the last five years and on four occasions winning to coveted  Palmerston North Teams Champs.

Other than Teams racing honours, Peter has also placed 2nd in the Battle of the Stocks and in 2006/07 won the Global Challenge in Palmerston North.  Always destined to do something much bigger on an individual front Peter driving his Nissan powered Gordge chassis won the NZ Welding School World 240’s in Rotorua in January earning him his spot in this years World Final.

Kyle Fraser NZ1

Kyle is 30 years old and has been racing for nine years. He is married to Philippa, and has three boys Josh 11, Jayden 5 and Flynn 2.

Like Peter, Kyle is a hardened Teams racer, racing for the very successful Bay Park Busters and winning the Palmerston North Teams Champs in 2003 and 2004, which is along with winning his 1NZ at Wanganui this year are his most memorable experiences.

In the 2007/08 season Kyle decided to give Teams racing a break for a season and concentrated on his Individual racing with great success. Also with a Nissan powered Gordge chassis, not only did he win the NZ Champs he placed 2nd in the North Island Championship and won a starting spot in next year’s World 240’s final by winning the 2nd tier championship.

Kyle would like to thank all of the people that have supposed him and his family to get to the World Final and hopes that he can do them proud.

2008 BriSCA F1 Stock Car Racing GOLD CUP

Startrax are delighted to confirm that the GOLD CUP for BriSCA Formula One and Formula Two Stock Cars WILL go ahead, as scheduled, on the 17/18th August at the WARNETON CIRCUIT in Belgium.

BriSCA Dutch liason officer Bev Greenhalf confirmed the news on Friday 11th July after notification from BVDC Chairman Henri Witterbol on behalf of SMC Venray.

Within hours, five UK F1 drivers had already indicated their entry to the event.

The Dutch season has been in some disarray in 2008 following the enforced closure of the Venray circuit and considerable opposition to alternative plans tabled by Mr Maassen, SMC promoter for different potential sites in the Limburg region including trying for a temporary reprieve, supported locally, to the highest Dutch legal authorities.

Indeed, it is understood that negotiations were still continuing for the weekend to take place at an entirely different venue just days before the eventual Warneton announcement. Maassen was also hoping to get his new German venue Meppen ready although it is more likely to be opening in September. For obvious reasons, the situation has through necessity been very fluid during the very challenging and intensive last few weeks and SMC Venray acknowledge the frustrations of UK fans and drivers in the lack of information and the lateness of the final decision. They do however very much look forward to welcoming race fans to the event after such a traumatic effort in making sure that the continuity of the event was preserved.

WARNETON was host venue for the recent finale of the Four Nations Championship in July and situated in Belgium and in close proximity to Calais, likely to prove popular for UK fans and drivers. SMC have been working with the Warneton promotion since F1's first debuted at the superbly appointed track which features high banking.

Drivers interested in competing this event should book in with Bev Greenhalf on 0121 476 5612. It is understood both days racing, entirely organised by SMC Venray, will get underway at 12 Noon although a full itinerary and further details will be published later.

SMC Venray are very much welcome ‘ participating’ guests in the 2008 BriSCA World Championship and Dutch race fans will be pleased to know that 2008 World Final Tickets should be on sale at the weekend although that is mainly likely to be General admission tickets - Front Straight Grandstand tickets are already almost a complete sell out with very few remaining - and approximately 60% of back straight seating has already been snapped up.

Health and Safety Update from the ORC

As announced earlier this year the ORC is undertaking a complete review of the Health & Safety of Drivers, Staff and Spectators at our race events.  This review will take place over the next three years and is designed to increase the awareness of all of us to the importance of making our sport as safe as possible for all who are involved in it.

We all accept that Motor Racing is dangerous but this doesn't mean that we shouldn't ensure that the risks are kept to a minimum so that we can all enjoy ourselves in what is, after all, our hobby.

Increasingly, the authorities are taking an interest in out sport and we must demonstrate to them that we take safety seriously and are the best people to ensure that Health & Safety matters are an ongoing concern to us all.

At the beginning of this season the ORC appointed two highly regarded professional consultants to assist them with Health and Safety matters.  Their brief was to deal with the whole spectrum of H&S throughout our sport.  They are focusing, in the first instance, on the re writing of the Code of Practice  for Short Circuit Oval Racing which is a document which was first published in 1994.  Also they are producing a new Noise Testing procedure for all formulas which is being trialled with Brisca F1 Stock Cars.

The Code of Practice is almost complete and will be going to print next month and will be circulated shortly after that.  The Noise testing procedure is well underway and we have already seen the Acoustic Engineers at race meetings and also they have visited various drivers workshops. It is hoped that a static noise testing procedure will be in place by the end of this year and we will then see the development of an Environmental Noise Impact Criteria for Oval Racing.

We are in the initial stages of developing  a series of training programmes for our Staff and Officials which will take place over the winter months.  These will range from basic Fire and Safety Training right up to IOSH and NEBOSH qualifications.

Starting next month an online accident reporting facility will be available for all promoters to report all accidents and near misses at each of their race meetings. All Brisca and ORC promoters have agreed to take part in this and these will be analysed on a regular basis by the Health & Safety Consultants and any trends can be identified and action taken to improve the safety of Drivers, Staff and Spectators.

Our Noise Consultants will also be reviewing another Code of Practice which was produced over a decade ago.  This was entitled 'Code of Practice for the Control of Noise from Oval Racing' and is in need of an update because of changes in legislation.

Add to the above a great deal of work being carried out in producing new ORC Sport Wide Guidelines and you will see that there is much to be done.  As you can imagine all the above is costing a great deal of money and this is being provided by us all - Promoters, Drivers (through the £1 Levy) and our Insurers. It will mean that everyone within our sport and those outside know that we take Safety seriously as well as having consideration for those that are affected by it.

JUNIOR STOX

Startrax in conjunction with NFR are to launch a brand new stock car racing formula in 2009 aptly names ‘JUNIOR STOX’ which will be for 10 - 16 year olds.

This project has in fairness been under discussion for several years however both parties have decided now to fully commit to a full launch in 2009.

The cars will be scaled down `Stock Cars’ built to include all the latest available safety equipment including Head and neck restraints. This will be a single source formula like the highly successful Rebel operation in that ALL cars will be supplied via NFR/Startrax with various spec options, however all cars will be identical, engines sealed and various after market components part listed to ensure that the formula is cost effective and safe.

The formula will be run under ORCi guidelines with regard Safety and spec but will be operated by Startrax and NFR with very strict control, rules and regulations.

The cars will have a 12 -14 date fixture list in 2009, initially exclusive to Startrax venues and will race at every Sheffield and Belle Vue in ‘09 pre-meeting with 2/3 races.

It is planned to debut prototypes at SHEFFIELD on 31st August and Belle Vue in October and November 9th.

A full specification including price and rules and regulations will be available for the end of August - for an initial chat you can e-mail steven@startrax.info or contact Neil at NFR for more info.

If you would like to go on the mailing list so an info pack can be sent to you later in the year e-mail steph@startrax.info and these should be forwarded early Autumn. The first date for the formula in 2009 will be March 21st at Belle Vue Manchester.

MOODIE HITS THE GOLD TRAIL IN SCOTLAND

GMP are delighted to announce that Scotland’s own Gordon Moodie will compete in the forthcoming BriSCA F1 Scottish Championship at the Cowdenbeath Racewall & Knockhill Tri-oval over the weekend of the 14th & 15th of June.

BriSCA F2 National Points Champion Moodie has secured a ride in the Mark Gilbank shale car which will be modified to race on the Scottish tar tracks. Moodie told us "If we can get the car to handle around Cowdenbeath & Knockhill we should be in with a chance of getting in the results as we know the tracks well & the best racing line around them".

With World Qualifying rounds at both tracks for both formula’s over the two days Moodie will be kept busy "It certainly won’t be easy but I’m looking forward to the challenge of racing both my F2 & the F1 in front of the big crowds at both venues. With World Qualifying points up for grabs the racing will be hard & their should be plenty action to keep the fans happy".

Moodie has already proved successful in the BriSCA F1’s on the shale at Belle Vue & Sheffield in Gilbank’s previous shale car which is hired by Startrax promoter Steve Rees for the former World champion to try & qualify for this years BriSCA F1 World Final at Ipswich in September. "Startrax have been good enough to help me by ensuring I have a car to race at their World Qualifiers, if I can get some points at my ‘home’ tracks then hopefully I’ll repay them by getting in one of the World Semi Final grids later in the year"

Swinton Car Project FORESTRY COMMISSION Sponsorship

The Startrax hosted BriSCA F1 Grand National Championship at Belle Vue in October has been kindly supported by the Swinton Car Project and one of it's major backers, The Forestry Commission.

Headed by Dave Woods the project works hard to secure and provide facilities for under priviliged kids to become involved in oval racing and it is currently concentrating at the moment to raise the overall profile of the project and bring oval racing and local communities closer together.

Whilst the project has been around for many years - growing successes within the community have broadened the projects aims.
More info will be released shortly and they will have a new website up and running.

Startrax and Swinton Motor Project develop Community initiative

Startrax are delighted to announce a ground breaking long term association with the SWINTON MOTOR PROJECT based in Greater Manchester.

Headed by Dave Woods, the project has specific aims by introducing youngsters to oval motor racing at a grass roots level and this has been made possible through a number of charitable benefactors and investment in specific projects within the community.

The Swinton Motor Project is enjoying an increasing awareness due to various successes over the last few years of various oval racing initiatives.

These projects have already proven hugely successful in providing activities in the Greater Manchester area which have enabled youngsters to become involved in Oval motorsport.

After several months of discussion, plans have been agreed for the 2008 season that allows a number of objectives to be fulfilled whilst achieving the main criteria of providing an affordable access to oval racing. The interest of high profile organisations through this project we jointly believe can only enhance oval motor sport and provide potential future development opportunities and profile for the sport as well as offering facilities for the local community.

Startrax boss Steve Rees added " Dave has a long background in community activities and has headed this project for a number of years. The ideas that he and I have discussed are long term however will raise the profile of the project, provide an immediate platform for competitors and allows our sport to become a bigger part of the community. Dave has done all the hard work thus far and he himself has exciting plans which we are delighted to dovetail with"

More information will be available at the Autosports International Show in January
